How might we develop a deeper understanding of our offline social network through our online social network?

7 Days on Whatsapp is a data visualization project that captures the conversations that I have had with people on Whatsapp to illustrate my relationship with them. I adapted Google's HEART framework to structure the goals, signals and metrics for the data analysis phase.

Developing goals, signals and metrics

Google's HEART framework has been a great tool for UX design and developing user experience in a focused and efficient manner. It also helps quantify qualitative information. I used a part of it, the goals-signals-methods framework to help me develop further understanding of how to analyze my offline social network. I found 4 broad goals that I needed to complete, found the signals that would help me get to these goals, and then the metrics that can be measured to understand this signal.

After the exercise I learned that I had to measure the following metrics for all the conversations that I had:

  • Who I spoke to (name and relation)

  • The most common words we used
  • how many words we sent to each other
  • The languages we spoke in
  • The times we spoke at
  • What general emotions we felt
  • Overall, what themes did we speak about? (categories!)
  • Where were the people I spoke to at the time of the conversation?
Structuring approach through a framework: Using Google's HEART framework to structure a complex research project like this proved useful: it helped me quantify qualitative information.

Data COLLECTION, SYNTHESIS, AND ANALYSIS

I started by categorizing the kinds of conversations I had with everyone in the last 7 days. I also looked up times, locations, word counts, and people.

I gathered all the data from my one week old whatsapp messages to categorize the content of my chats and to record lengths, word counts, times, and locations of all chats.

Data visualization and designing

The final product is an infographic that visualizes all the data that has been collected, analyzed and synthesized through my Whatsapp conversations. It aims to provide a structure that allows comparison of the conversations that I have had with everyone and also provides some general data about the context of my conversations.

This includes the range of emotions I have felt through my conversations, the physical locations I have sent messages to, the times of the day I used Whatsapp to talk to my social network as well as the languages that I have used over the course of the week.

Design: All gathered data was synthesized, analyzed and structured into an infographic that allows for comparison between the chats I have with my close social network.

What I learned

  • Researching and understanding Google's HEART framework
  • Using a framework to create structure for a broad qualitative research topic
  • Narrowing the scope of data to analyze and then building upon it
  • Sketching and developing a layout for clear data visualization
